In Tesco’s Bags of Help scheme, customers voted us the top grant of £12,000 – all raised from revenue generated by the 5p charge for single-use carrier bags. Our Workhouse Wood project was short-listed from hundreds of applications for the Greenwich region. This is a fantastic achievement.

We have now received further funding to pursue this project from the People’s Postcode Lottery. We will now be able to realise the dream for the beautiful woodland that had lain behind a battered corrugated-iron fence for decades . . . We want to give the whole community a beautiful green space to enjoy . . .

. . . so we’ve taken the fence down, and we’ve made a path

We put bird boxes all over the site, which is also a haven for wild-life. And many interesting features, which are still visible, survive from the old Woolwich Union Workhouse, but there is still much to be done . . . see our project plan here.

- we brought in tree specialists to make the woodland safer

- we will create a Tree Trail and a Forest School Classroom in a woodland glade

- we will create and install interpretive signs and seats where people can enjoy the peace and listen to the birds

- to create safe access for those less able
