Situated at the west end of Plumstead Common, behind Blendon Terrace, this is a wooded area containing a variety of trees. It had long been neglected, becoming an unofficial dumping ground. Neighbours who got together to clear the huge accumulation of rubbish became founder members of the Group. With the cooperation of the Council and a grant from the Co-op, we adopted the site.

We have planted additional native trees and shrubs. A group of volunteers carries out work once a month. The reserve is used by local schools for “Forest Schools” projects. A major project, that has replaced the boundary fence and that will improve access by constructing steps, has been completed.

Pictured left are the new steps that we have built on the east and west sides of the reserve. The integration of the nature reserve with a community growing project at Spiral Garden will soon be complete.

This transformation was inspired by the London 2012 Changing Places Programme. The development has been partly funded by a Sita Trust landfill grant in association with Entrust.

The Plumstead Common Nature Reserve and Spiral Garden development project has been partly funded through the Community Spaces programme which is being managed by Groundwork UK as an Award Partner to the Big Lottery Fund. Community Spaces is part of the Big Lottery Fund’s Changing Spaces Initiative.
